My husband and I moved to Portugal in 2022 with our two young children. Since then, we’ve navigated residency, healthcare, schools, banking, mortgages and buying a home.

The checklist draws on that experience. It’s written primarily for non-EU citizens, particularly Americans, with practical guidance that can help people moving from elsewhere, too.

For the stories behind the list, read what I wish I’d known before moving to Portugal.
